Coincidences [Wed 27 Aug 2003|12:26am]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Starting at the most recent (i.e. a few mins ago):

Libra
You should be dating a Libra.
23 September - 22 October
This mate is artistic, refined, loving and
romantic. Though the balance of Libra can
display manipulative, overbearing and indolent
traits, this mate is sure to be a passionate
addition to your bed.

What Zodiac Sign Are You Attracted To?
brought to you by Quizilla

Well f--- me. And HONESTLY that was what it gave me 1st time!!!!!
Plus that's the first quiz I've done in aaaaaaaaages, so it's not like I've done 12 of the same kinda thing in the last week :-P
How the HELL did it get it right first time??
(I mean the starsign. BTW, what does indolent mean?)
The only explanation I suppose is if you believe in the astrology stuff, which (if u didn't know) I didn't really... and in which case it was me who got it right, rather than the quiz.

But that's hardly the 1st coincidence recently...

On to the second to last; to summarise: aleph_0.
This was a person on an email group I'm on; friend of a friend kinda thing. What was weird was I was reading her journal ENTIRELY AT RANDOM because an lj friend of mine mentioned her in a post. And on the SAME DAY I received an email which gave basically the biggest possible clue that these two people (on lj and on yahoo! group) could be the same person!! Before it I hadn't thought about it at all!!
Plus, the two friends/groups of friends through which I am linked to her are so ENTIRELY unrelated, so u can't use that as an explanation.

Plus, a third in like the last week:
There's a website with like 100,000 members across the world (an Iranian community thing). My friend introduced me to it recently. Now, on their front page (or after clicking 1 link), a sidebar came up with "random faces of the website", with three randomly picked members' pictures. Now, out of these three, the first of them was the friend who'd introduced me to the website, which in itself is pretty damn weird. And the SECOND was a MUTUAL FRIEND of ours, and neither of us knew beforehand that he had an account there!!!

And I'm certain there's many I've missed out!
For one thing there's been more of the usual stuff. "Oh, that's weird -- I was about to pick up the fone to call you" etc.

So does this mean the world's ending?
Any alternative explanations?

And how's that for bursting back after a long absence?

Randomness [Thu 17 Jul 2003|1:15am]
[ mood | curious ]

Well isn't this a time of randomness.

Receiving two postcards in succession!! That's surprising for me!
Then there's the whole EVERYTHING GOING ON IN LATE AUGUST.
Which is also a bit too coincidental.
Plus IMO team people being in Australia and us almost going there at (at least almost) the same time. But we didn't in the end.

But also, LJ randomness.
2 people added me recently, with interesting links...

Firstly pensierobello...
Shortest links between us:

Which are really quite long links.
So was it random? Or did you get a tip-off ;-)
In which case why didn't you add me earlier? :-P
And yeah, I'd love some icons! I'm useless at art myself.

But more randomly:

Now that's looong chains. And a chain including george_w_bush is cheating anyway!
Though I suppose that's just very random, and not really coincidental, 'cos I don't know you!

Hmm...
Er...
Hmm...

I suppose I quite like 7.
And Despot is definitely better than Ruler of the Free World, erica_freak :-P
A home help badge?
And what does "vicarious" mean?
OK, I'll stop questioning them one by one.

In other news: Life is wyrd.

I would rant about exams, the System, 6 exams for me next week, etc, but it's past midnight.
And before I do any more posting, I think I'd better reply to a few emails :-S

And I'm still waiting for that LJ code...

Interesting...
I don't think I've come across a 35% before!!

In other news...

I found an lj friends cycle, involving kazzik as the person I didnt know. But this was ages ago. Now hailebop has added ponchki and the loop's closed.

Anything else... Ah yes, I've said that I'm going to use this more often. I'll make an effort. Really.

Matrix Persona [Mon 26 May 2003|12:29am]

You are Agent Smith-
You are Agent Smith, from "The Matrix."
No one would ever want to run into you in a
dark alley. Cold as steel, tough as a rock,
things are your way or the highway.

What Matrix Persona Are You?

I'm quite happy with taht! I've actually always liked the guy!

I tend to have this problem of feeling an affinity with the "villain" in so many films. Q out of Star Trek is one! I think the guy's great! well, he was great when he was evil anyway.

Even *I* think this is verging on geeky... [Sun 11 May 2003|10:32pm]
[ mood | geeky ]

If I were a Springer-Verlag Graduate Text in Mathematics, I would be Serge Lang's Algebraic Number Theory.

I cover all of the basic material of classical algebraic number theory, giving the student the background necessary for the study of further topics in algebraic number theory, such as cyclotomic fields, or modular forms. Part I introduces some of the basic ideas of the theory: number fields, ideal classes, ideles and adeles, and zeta functions. It also contains a version of a Riemann-Roch theorem in number fields, proved by Lang in the very first version of the book in the sixties. This version can now be seen as a precursor of Arakelov theory. Part II covers class field theory, and Part III is devoted to analytic methods, including an exposition of Tate's thesis, the Brauer-Siegel theorem, and Weil's explicit formulas. This new edition of me contains corrections, as well as several additions to the previous edition, and the last chapter on explicit formulas has been rewritten.

Which Springer GTM would you be?
The Springer GTM Test

Kerrayzee...

Is this actually a Springer ad?!

Thanx to erica_freak. Tis amusing indeed.

What the Hell (sorry :-S) [Fri 02 May 2003|2:48pm]
The Dante's Inferno Test has banished you to the Eigth Level of Hell - the Malebolge!
Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
LevelScore
Purgatory (Repenting Believers)Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo (Virtuous Non-Believers)Low
Level 2 (Lustful)Very High
Level 3 (Gluttonous)Very Low
Level 4 (Prodigal and Avaricious)Low
Level 5 (Wrathful and Gloomy)Moderate
Level 6 - The City of Dis (Heretics)Very High
Level 7 (Violent)Low
Level 8- the Malebolge (Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers)Very High
Level 9 - Cocytus (Treacherous)High

Take the Dante's Inferno Test

OK, the last 1 was funny, but this is actually worrying!

I seem to be a much exaggerated version of toft_froggy, and nothing like as virtuous as erica_freak!!

Haha, oh well.

I'm a certified weirdo!

Nice!

A few things it's wrong about though...

The thing I think it's least right about is the second half of the description of "obsessive-compulsive".

Anyways, that was entertaining!

GNARGH! [Mon 31 Mar 2003|11:09pm]
I do not have a computer. This is unbelievably painful.

It has been taken away after it went mad and attempted suicide.

It was slightly eccentric for a while (since before christmas), but it worked sometimes. Then an engineer EVENTUALLY came to fix it a few weeks ago. It took one look at him and fainted, never to wake up again.

Now they tell me they can't give me my hard drive back.
IT HAS MY A2 PHYSICS COURSEWORK ON IT!!!

Arg.

Hence lack of posts.

A Crazy 2 Weeks [Sun 02 Mar 2003|6:16pm]
[ mood | stressed ]

Woah!!! I've REALLY got a hectic 2 weeks ahead!

I didn't realise how bad it was, until I txted Jenny saying I've got a crazy 2 weeks ahead. And she asked what I was doing.
So I started to reply; I thought it was just a coupla things. But then I kept remembering more and more and... GNARGH!

For anyone who's interested, here's my schedule.

Monday: Physics Olympiad Round 3
I have done absolutely no preparation for it and I'm not gonna get anywhere cos I only got through the last round by choosing to do the mathematical questions. This time, we don't get a choice of question! I think I should have given my place up to erica_freak...

Tuesday: Hans Woyda Maths Competition Plate Final
This isn't really important, but it is time-consuming. Especially when it's held in Dulwich College!!
We have absolutely no chance of winning; we're against Westminster. In one of their first-round matches, out of a possible 69 points, they scored 66. The best we've done in 7 years is when we got a huge score of 51!!
(Although this is also the first time in 7 years we've got through to any sort of final.)

Wednesday: Teaching little kids badminton
After school, we go and play badminton with the yr 7-9s in our school. We're meant to teach them how it's done. However, I'm not a teacher. No good at it. So I get Emily to tell them how they're meant to be playing, and she ends up telling ME that I'm doing it all wrong!
It's not a major event, but it does mean I get home at about 7.30, and am very tired, so it basically takes up the whole evening. And also, in conjunction with everything else, it means I have no free time!!

Thursday: Debate -- "This House Loathes London"
Hmm... This one's only a lunchtime, but I have to find some time to do a bit of preparation for it!! And it's meant to be a funny debate! I'm just not funny enough! At least I'm free in the evening, which should give me some (though nowhere near enough) time to prepare for...

Friday to Sunday: Model United Nations
For anyone who doesn't know, this is where we have to represent a delegation from a particular country, and debate resolutions on things ranging from war on Iraq to discrimination against homosexuals to the state of turnip farming in Eastern Singapore.
But it's not just debating. It's a great weekend. Several hundred students staying in Bath for 2 nights...

Monday: Debating Friendly
Hoping to set one up as practice for Saturday.

Tuesday: Hmm...
Now there's definitely something I was meant to be doing, but I can't remember!!
Hopefully I'll remember by then.

Wednesday: Badminton
The last practice session we have before Friday.

Thursday: Computing Olympiad (BIO)
Basically a programming competition. So in the 2 preceding weeks I have to learn a programming language properly.
I've started learning C. I'm 7 days into a 21 day course.
Hmm....
Maybe it's not such a bad thing if I fail this and the Physics though. The top 20 people get to do lots and lots more work!!

Friday: Badminton Match
Not sure who it's against. But I'm in it. Finally. Partnering Vic in mixed doubles. So if she decides she's gonna forget her trainers again...

Saturday: Oxford Union Debating Final
This will be fun. We got no real chance of getting anywhere. I'm actually very surprised we got this far, considering our performance on Thursday, but that's another story... But there should be at least a few people I know there.
I wonder if it'll be anything like the MUN. I doubt it somehow!

And during this period, I have to do 5 Physics courseworks, school work (e.g. catching up with 3 politics essays), not to mention the programming and MUN preparation and so on. Plus I have such a HUGE backlog of emails to reply to!! From Novemberish...

So why am I sitting here writing this? Cos my Phys coursework's gotten too depressing... But back to it I must go!
And if anyone sees me on MSN, tell me to go do some work!!

Hmm there doesn't seem to be a mood for "shitting myself in anticipation of failing to survive the next fortnight"...

If You're Happy And You Know It Bomb Iraq [Tue 18 Feb 2003|7:24pm]
[ mood | amused ]

(To the tune of "If You're Happy And You Know It Clap Your Hands")

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are frisky,
Pakistan is looking shifty,
North Korea is too risky,
Bomb Iraq.

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think that someone's dissed us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
Bomb Iraq.

It's pre-emptive non-aggression, bomb Iraq.
To prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq.
They've got weapons we can't see,
And that's all the proof we need,
If they're not there, they must be there,
Bomb Iraq.

If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think Saddam's gone mad,
With the weapons that he had,
And he tried to kill your dad,
Bomb Iraq.

If corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq.
If your politics are sleazy,
And hiding that ain't easy,
And your manhood's getting queasy,
Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq.
Disagree? We'll call it treason,
Let's make war not love this season,
Even if we have no reason,
Bomb Iraq.

Godel Escher Bach [Fri 14 Feb 2003|3:00pm]
GEB is BRILLIANT!!

Just the first two pages of the preface gave me a lot to think about!

Go on, Giles; I dare you to be controversial about that :P

I find it very funny that it's got a 25 page preface describing what the book's about.

For those of you who don't know:

First Entry [Thu 13 Feb 2003|12:54am]
[ mood | numb ]

I have a livejournal! etc.
[Insert whatever it is you're expected/supposed to say.]

The modification interface is krap.
I'll fix these krappy colours/layout when i can be bothered.

Oh and i'll get myself a little pic possibly.

Hmm...
That's about it.

This is not gonna be used to discuss all aspects of my feelings and my life and so on cos it seems to me to be a little impersonal. That would imply i dont need to talk to people any more.

I like talking to people. I prefer talking to people.

So I'm gonna post stuff here which I see which I think is interesting.
And maybe interesting things that happen to me.
If I feel like it.

And maybe random comments which only 1 or 2 people will understand.

Now I think I'm done.

Ah, almost forgot. Thanx to erica_freak for the code thingy.

That's the first post over then...
